May 2021 Gasoline Phaseout News

Washington State was the first in the nation to pass a bill setting a goal for all new cars to be electric starting with model year 2030 through both legislative chambers on April 14. Poised to be the country's most ambitious gas car phaseout target and the first to be approved by a state legislature, the section on clean cars was vetoed by Gov. Inslee on May 13 in a surprise move.

On March 23, Clean Cars 2030 took one step closer to becoming law when it advanced out of the Washington State Senate Committee on Environment, Energy & Technology as an amendment to SHB 1287. Residents are speaking out against a proposal for a new 28-pump Costco gas station in Novato, California. The mega-station would be the largest gas station in Marin County, requiring three underground storage tanks of 40,000 gallons each. Discounted gasoline is already available at a Safeway just a few miles away.

States, including California, Washington, New York and New Jersey, are moving forward with aggressive new regulations and bills to phase out sales of new gas cars by 2030 or 2035. Regions are stepping up, too. Silicon Valley is seeking to cut gasoline consumption in the region 50% by 2030, and Los Angeles aims to have 80% of new vehicles sold be electric by 2028.

Uber has pledged that vehicles on its ride-hailing platform will be zero-emission by 2030 in the United States, Canada and Europe, and across the globe  by 2040. The company has 5 million drivers worldwide. It vowed to contribute $800 million through 2025 to help drivers switch to battery-powered vehicles, including discounts for vehicles bought or leased from its partner automakers, which currently include General Motors and the Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. Uber competitor Lyft has already made a similar commitment to have 100% EVs on its platform by 2030.
