Washington State was the first in the nation to pass a bill setting a goal for all new cars to be electric starting with model year 2030 through both legislative chambers on April 14. Poised to be the country's most ambitious gas car phaseout target and the first to be approved by a state legislature, the section on clean cars was vetoed by Gov. Inslee on May 13 in a surprise move.

On March 23, Clean Cars 2030 took one step closer to becoming law when it advanced out of the Washington State Senate Committee on Environment, Energy & Technology as an amendment to SHB 1287. The bill now goes to the Senate Transportation Committee. In addition to setting a goal of 100% new EV sales by 2030, SHB 1287 will help prepare Washington State for the zero-emission vehicle futu

Residents are speaking out against a proposal for a new 28-pump Costco gas station in Novato, California. The mega-station would be the largest gas station in Marin County, requiring three underground storage tanks of 40,000 gallons each. Discounted gasoline is already available at a Safeway just a few miles away.

Clean Cars 2030 (HB 1204) passed out of the Washington State House Transportation Committee by a vote of 17-12 on February 22. The next hurdle will be for the bill to pass the House Rules Committee before March 9.

States, including California, Washington, New York and New Jersey, are moving forward with aggressive new regulations and bills to phase out sales of new gas cars by 2030 or 2035. Regions are stepping up, too. Silicon Valley is seeking to cut gasoline consumption in the region 50% by 2030, and Los Angeles aims to have 80% of new vehicles sold be electric by 2028.

A new poll conducted by Yale University, George Mason University and Climate Nexus found that 59 percent of Washington voters support a policy that would require cars and light trucks of model year 2030 or later be electric in order to be registered in Washington state.
