Governor Inslee: Establish a 2030 Gas Car Phaseout Goal Now!
______________
Washington State was the first in the nation to pass a bill setting a goal for all new cars to be electric starting with model year 2030 through both legislative chambers on April 14. Poised to be the country’s most ambitious gas car phaseout target and the first to be approved by a state legislature, the section on clean cars was vetoed by Gov. Inslee on May 13 in a surprise move.
In a statement issued after the veto, the governor said he is “committed to getting to zero emissions transportation as quickly as possible” but objected to linking the 2030 new vehicle electrification target to a yet-to-be-implemented road usage charge, a condition to the bill added by Sen. Steve Hobbs.
We are calling on Governor Inslee to establish a 2030 new vehicle electrification goal for Washington state by Executive Order.
In his presidential run, Gov. Inslee campaigned for a 2030 gas car phaseout at the national level. The Executive Order is a clear way he can act on his commitment to clean cars by 2030 in Washington, reduce carbon emissions and create a safer, healthier future for all.
