Southern California Edison (SCE) EV Rebate In 2026

Learn about SCE’s $1,000 or $4,000 pre-owned EV rebate, EV charger assistance, charging rates, and other CA EV incentives available in 2026.

Southern California Edison customers may qualify for a $1,000 rebate after buying or leasing an eligible pre-owned battery-electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, or a $4,000 total rebate through the income-qualified Rebate Plus option. SCE also has separate help of up to $4,200 for qualifying home panel, circuit and outlet work through Charge Ready Home—but that is not a general $4,200 rebate for buying a charger.

SCE’s rebate may be only one part of the assistance available. California drivers should also check MyFirstEV, which launched on August 7, 2026, as well as income-qualified programs such as the Driving Clean Assistance Program (DCAP) and Clean Cars 4 All (CC4A).

To screen SCE alongside statewide and regional programs, see our nonprofit's guide to California EV rebates and incentives in 2026.

Program funding, vehicle lists and rules can change. Check current availability before committing to a vehicle or electrical project.

A quick overview of steps you can take as an SCE customer:

  1. Confirm that your SCE service address and the vehicle you are considering meet the basic rules.
  2. Apply for SCE preapproval before shopping when possible so you can reserve funds.
  3. Check other California programs before buying; some will not help with a vehicle purchased too early.
  4. Keep the complete purchase, lease, title and registration records.
  5. Submit the final SCE claim within 180 days of the transaction date.
  6. If you need electrical work, apply separately for Charge Ready Home before construction when practical.

You can also check the official SCE pre-owned EV rebate requirements or check every California EV incentive you may qualify for.

What is the Southern California Edison EV rebate?

The current Southern California Edison electric vehicle rebate is the SCE Pre-Owned EV Rebate. It pays $1,000 at the standard level or $4,000 total through Rebate Plus for an eligible used BEV or PHEV. The $4,000 amount is not $4,000 on top of the standard rebate; it is a $3,000 increase over the $1,000 standard amount.

SCE says customers may begin before or after acquiring the vehicle. Preapproval is not a final rebate payment, but it can reserve funds and reduce the risk of buying first. A final claim still must be approved.

Buying a new EV instead? SCE does not currently offer an equivalent general new-vehicle purchase rebate, but California, regional, manufacturer and dealer incentives may still be available. Check Coltura’s guide to other California electric-car incentives.

Core SCE used-EV rebate requirements

  • The claim must connect to an active SCE residential service account. The account can be in another person’s name, but the vehicle must be registered at that service address.
  • A vehicle registered at an address served through a commercial SCE account is not eligible.
  • Customers receiving SCE delivery service through Community Choice Aggregation or Direct Access can qualify under the detailed program requirements.
  • The vehicle must be an eligible pre-owned BEV or PHEV on SCE’s current eligible-vehicle list. Conventional hybrids do not qualify.
  • The applicant must be an owner or lessee shown on the California registration, and the address must match the SCE service address.
  • The vehicle must remain registered to and possessed by the applicant in California for 20 consecutive months from the transaction date. Early disposal can trigger prorated repayment.
  • The application and final claim must be submitted within 180 days of the date shown on the purchase contract, lease agreement or finalized private-party title.

SCE does not publish one simple mileage or purchase-price ceiling on its main eligibility page. Instead, the exact year, make and model must appear on the live list, and the transaction must satisfy SCE’s definition of pre-owned. The detailed rules generally treat a vehicle as used when it was previously registered and the records show it as used, or when it has more than 7,500 miles; special cases remain subject to SCE review.

Who qualifies for the $4,000 SCE Rebate Plus?

Rebate Plus pays $4,000 total to an applicant who meets all standard program rules and qualifies through either an approved public-assistance program or SCE’s household-income test.

Option 1: approved public-assistance enrollment

SCE’s current Rebate Plus list includes Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, CalFresh/SNAP, CalWORKs or Tribal TANF, Drive Clean in the San Joaquin Replace Program, tribal income-eligible Head Start, LIHEAP, income-qualified Medi-Cal, Medi-Cal for Families A&B, an income-qualified Charge Ready Home approval, SSI and WIC. The applicant must have been enrolled on the vehicle transaction date, the name must match, and proof generally must be dated within 12 months of application.

CARE or FERA enrollment is not listed by itself as automatic Rebate Plus proof on SCE’s current eligibility list. If CARE or FERA is your only income-assistance program, ask SCE what additional documentation it will require.

Option 2: household-income verification

The limit depends on household size, the SCE-area county or ZIP where the applicant lived and registered the vehicle, and the vehicle transaction period. Use SCE’s dated income lookup rather than an undated statewide table.

  • Household size: the taxpayer or joint taxpayers plus dependents on the relevant federal return. Roommates or other residents not listed on that return are not simply added.
  • Income: SCE describes annual gross household income as including taxable and nontaxable sources for adult household members.
  • Tax evidence: SCE requests an official IRS Tax Return Transcript, not an Account Transcript or an ordinary copy of Form 1040. The relevant return generally must have been filed within two years of the purchase or lease.
  • Dependents: an applicant claimed as someone else’s dependent for the tax year SCE uses is not eligible for Rebate Plus.
  • Non-filers: the detailed requirements allow SCE to request alternative evidence, such as earnings or benefit records, at its discretion.

Tax documents should not be emailed. SCE’s application instructions tell applicants who need a secure upload link to call 209-670-0055.

Eligible vehicles, leases and private-party purchases

Eligible battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids can qualify. Conventional hybrids that cannot be plugged in do not. A used Tesla may qualify if its model and model year appear on SCE’s eligible list and the customer, transaction and prior-rebate rules are met.

Dealer purchases qualify. Private-party purchases also qualify, but SCE requires the finalized California Certificate of Title showing the applicant as the new owner; a bill of sale alone is not the final title evidence SCE identifies. For a private sale, the title transfer date controls the 180-day clock, and SCE may request more evidence if that date is missing.

Used leases can qualify. A lease assumption can also qualify if at least 20 months remain between the transfer and lease-end dates. Ordinary leases must support the 20-month possession requirement and come through an eligible dealer, retailer or leasing agency under the detailed rules.

Before buying, use Coltura’s used-EV inspection and buying guide and compare used EV deals near you. Program eligibility does not replace a battery-health, title-history or vehicle-condition check.

Repeat-rebate and prior-rebate restrictions

  • One applicant may receive one SCE Pre-Owned EV Rebate in a 24-month period.
  • An applicant may receive rebates for no more than three vehicles over the program beginning December 2, 2021.
  • A household, defined by residential service address, may submit no more than three rebate applications for vehicles acquired in a calendar year.
  • Owners, co-owners, lessees, co-lessees and their household may receive only one rebate for an eligible vehicle.

The same-vehicle exclusion is applicant-specific. SCE bars a claim when the applicant or registered co-owner or co-lessee already received an SCE Pre-Owned EV Rebate, PG&E or SDG&E used-EV rebate, SCE Clean Fuel Reward or California Clean Fuel Reward for that vehicle. In other words, the rebate does not necessarily “follow the VIN” forever. If a vehicle has a complicated ownership or rebate history, ask SCE to review it before purchasing.

How does the Edison EV rebate work?

SCE describes a two-stage process: reserve funds through preapproval, then submit the final rebate claim. Applying before the vehicle transaction is allowed and prudent, but an otherwise eligible buyer or lessee may start afterward if still inside the 180-day window.

  1. Create a portal account. Choose the $1,000 standard application or the $4,000 Rebate Plus application.
  2. Verify the household’s SCE service. Upload a recent residential SCE bill and explain the relationship if the account holder is someone else.
  3. Complete prescreening. Upload a valid California driver’s license, signed terms and, for Rebate Plus, approved-benefit or income evidence.
  4. Receive preapproval. If accepted, SCE issues a preapproval code and reserves funds. This does not waive the vehicle and final-claim rules.
  5. Buy or lease an eligible used EV. Keep the complete contract, title, registration and proof needed for the transaction type.
  6. Submit the final claim. Upload the vehicle and transaction documents within 180 days of the date on the applicable contract or finalized private-party title.
  7. Respond to requests. Check the portal and email for missing-document or clarification notices.
  8. Complete payment setup. Approved rebates are paid by ACH to a bank account; SCE says an email is sent when payment is processed.

Do not apply for and accept approval only at the standard level if you intend to seek Rebate Plus for that same vehicle. The detailed program rules say an applicant approved for the standard rebate cannot later obtain the additional Rebate Plus amount for that vehicle.

What about taxes? SCE does not provide a universal public answer about whether every recipient will receive a particular tax form. Its terms make recipients responsible for determining any tax consequences. Keep your approval and payment records and consult a qualified tax professional if the rebate’s treatment could affect your return.

Documents to gather

  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Recent SCE residential bill
  • Signed SCE customer terms and conditions
  • Purchase or lease contract, or finalized California title for a private-party sale
  • Current California registration showing the applicant and SCE service address
  • Lease-assumption documents when applicable
  • Approved public-assistance proof or official IRS Return Transcript for Rebate Plus
  • Any additional explanation or evidence SCE requests to reconcile names, dates, addresses or vehicle status

How long does it take for the SCE EV rebate to be processed?

SCE does not publish one guaranteed total application-to-bank-deposit timeline. Its FAQ says rebate payments are typically processed within 20 days after the application or final claim is approved. That is a post-approval payment window, not a promise that the entire review will finish in 20 days.

What the published processing information does and does not mean
Stage Published timing Practical interpretation
Preapproval review No universal turnaround published Income verification or document questions can add time.
Final claim review No universal turnaround published The clock depends on a complete, consistent file and any follow-up.
After approval Payment typically processed within 20 days ACH delivery can still depend on correct banking information and banking processes.

To reduce avoidable delay, make names and addresses consistent, upload readable multi-page documents, use the finalized title for a private-party sale, provide the correct household and income evidence, and respond promptly to a program request. Track progress by logging in to the SCE rebate customer portal.

What is the Southern California Edison EV charger rebate?

Charge Ready Home is often described as an “SCE EV charger rebate,” but that shorthand can be misleading. The program reimburses qualifying electrical infrastructure; it does not generally pay for the Level 2 charging unit itself.

The income-qualified Charge Ready Home tier covers up to 100% of eligible project costs, capped at $4,200. The geographic tier covers up to 50% of eligible costs, capped at $2,100, for an eligible home in a top-25% disadvantaged community under the SB 535 map. A household qualifies for one tier, not both added together, and a rebate cannot exceed eligible paid costs.

What the project must generally include

  • An attached or detached single-family home with its own panel and non-shared SCE meter. Certain mobile or manufactured homes may qualify if they have a main pedestal of at least 200 amps or direct utility service that permits the required 200-amp panel upgrade.
  • Replacement of an existing main service panel rated below 200 amps with a new 200-amp panel
  • A new dedicated circuit and 240-volt outlet for Level 2 charging
  • The outlet within 25 feet of dedicated off-street parking
  • Permitted work by a properly licensed C-10 electrical or General B contractor
  • A Level 2 charger installed, or an attestation that one will be installed within 180 days of the panel upgrade

The resident does not have to own or lease an EV when applying. Renters can qualify with the property owner’s written authorization. Community Choice Aggregation and Direct Access customers can qualify if SCE provides the eligible delivery service.

SCE permits customers to apply while planning, during construction, or within six months after completed work, but the program manual encourages applying first. That is safer because funding is limited and is not reserved until the application is approved. Approved projects generally must be completed within six months of approval.

Expect to provide identity and eligibility evidence, a contractor quote or itemized invoice, permits and inspection records, photos of the old and new panel and outlet, proof of payment, charger evidence or attestation, and owner permission for a rental. Applicants may use an in-network or qualified out-of-network contractor, but payment and paperwork routes differ. Read the official Charge Ready Home application steps before signing a construction contract.

Does the program publish a processing time?

SCE does not publish one standard end-to-end Charge Ready Home processing time. Review can include document checks and inspection. Do not schedule work or borrow money on the assumption that the rebate will arrive by a particular date.

What is SCE’s $100 home-charger installation offer?

SCE’s EV incentives page separately advertises $100 in professional Level 2 installation savings through the SCE Home Electrification Marketplace. Treat this as a marketplace installation promotion, not a $100 cash rebate for any charger or contractor. Confirm current service territory, contractor, equipment, booking and combination terms before purchase.

Using the marketplace is not listed as a condition of Charge Ready Home, which has both contractor-network and customer-managed paths. The $100 discount may reduce the cost that remains eligible for reimbursement, so ask both the marketplace contractor and Charge Ready Home administrator how it will appear on the invoice before assuming the two benefits add together.

Southern California Edison EV charging rates and peak hours

TOU-D-PRIME remains SCE’s principal EV-oriented residential rate. It is available to qualifying homes with a BEV, PHEV, battery or electric heat pump, and it applies to the whole home, not only the vehicle. The plan’s highest-priced window is generally 4–9 p.m.

On SCE’s current TOU-D-PRIME page, lower-priced hours are outside the 4–9 p.m. window, with season and weekday or weekend distinctions. From October through May, SCE also identifies an 8 a.m.–4 p.m. super-off-peak period. The plan carries a daily base service charge and does not provide a baseline credit. CCA or Direct Access customers may have different generation charges from the bundled prices shown by SCE.

SCE allows a qualifying customer to use the existing whole-home meter or request a second meter; the EV Meter Credit is designed to offset the second meter’s additional base service charges. A second meter is not automatically the cheaper choice after installation cost.

Is TOU-D-PRIME worth it? It may be if you can shift EV charging and other substantial household use away from 4–9 p.m. It can cost more for a household that uses a lot of electricity during that window. Use SCE’s personalized rate-plan comparison tool with your own usage data. A time-of-use rate is potential bill savings, not a rebate.

Charge Smart–SoCal managed-charging rewards

Charge Smart–SoCal is a limited managed-charging program, not a vehicle or charger-purchase rebate. Eligible participants can receive a $50 enrollment gift card after completing a 15-day connection check. The program also offers a $50 gift card at an enrollment anniversary, but it is currently scheduled to operate only through July 2027, so a new participant should not assume that an annual reward will be available.

Eligibility is limited to selected Gateway Cities ZIP codes and compatible technology. Direct enrollment supports certain vehicles; charger-based enrollment supports qualified ChargePoint Home Flex, Wallbox Pulsar Plus and Emporia equipment and can work with a broader range of BEVs and PHEVs. Participants must keep the device connected, allow charging data and control, and satisfy participation conditions. A customer cannot simultaneously use another utility managed-charging program.

Modeled charging-cost savings are not guaranteed cash rewards. Enrollment or annual gift cards may take roughly four to six weeks after the applicable connection or anniversary check. Charge Smart–SoCal may be combined with a separate vehicle rebate or qualifying electrical-work rebate because it rewards charging behavior, but confirm the current terms for the specific account.

Other California EV incentives SCE customers should check

The SCE rebate may be only one piece of a savings package. Check approval timing before shopping: several programs will not fund a vehicle bought too early.

  • MyFirstEV: CARB launched point-of-sale rebates of $3,500 for a qualifying new first ZEV and $1,750 for a qualifying used first ZEV. The program is BEV or fuel-cell only, manufacturer-specific and subject to allocation. Used vehicles must be qualifying manufacturer-certified pre-owned vehicles; an ordinary private-party used EV does not qualify. Check the current participating manufacturers and availability immediately before shopping.
  • Driving Clean Assistance Program: Income-qualified applicants may receive vehicle and charging assistance, but the financing-assistance pathway was announced for closure in 2026 and applications were not guaranteed. The scrap-and-replace pathway remains subject to region, income, vehicle and funding rules. Review the current DCAP funding notice and preapproval rules.
  • Clean Cars 4 All: Participating air districts offer income-qualified replacement grants when an eligible older vehicle is retired. The CARB program overview explains district and income limits. Approval before buying is essential.
  • Replace Your Ride: The South Coast AQMD portal advertised awards up to $12,000 but stated that new applications were temporarily suspended as of this fact check. Do not rely on an older SCE summary showing $9,500; check the live Replace Your Ride status.
  • BAR Consumer Assistance Program: California’s vehicle-retirement program currently lists $1,350, $1,500 or $2,000 depending on income and Smog Check circumstances. Apply and receive approval before retiring the vehicle through the official CAP process.
  • Manufacturer, dealer and local offers: These can change quickly. Compare the transaction price, financing, lease terms and program rules rather than focusing only on the advertised rebate. Coltura’s EV deal finder can help with the shopping step.

California’s former Clean Vehicle Rebate Project is not an open universal purchase rebate in 2026. Federal new and used clean-vehicle purchase credits are also unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, under current IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance. The personal alternative-fuel refueling property credit applied only to eligible property placed in service through June 30, 2026, so an August 2026 home installation is past that cutoff.

For current ZIP-, income- and vehicle-specific details, compare California EV rebates by ZIP code and income. If a gas vehicle must be retired, also review Coltura’s guide to cash-for-clunkers and replacement programs.

Can SCE incentives be combined with other rebates?

Some combinations are potentially stackable because they pay for different things or because both programs permit other assistance. That does not make every combination automatic. Get written confirmation from both administrators before buying, leasing, scrapping a vehicle or starting electrical work.

Stacking guide as of August 17, 2026
Combination Can they potentially be combined? Main limitation What to confirm before acting
SCE used-EV rebate + Charge Ready Home Yes, potentially Separate vehicle and electrical-work qualifications; Charge Ready Home cannot exceed eligible project costs Funding for both; a recent Rebate Plus approval may support Charge Ready Home income qualification
SCE used-EV rebate + MyFirstEV Potentially MyFirstEV used benefit is for a first qualifying ZEV and manufacturer-certified used BEV; SCE allows listed BEVs and PHEVs Manufacturer allocation, vehicle eligibility, transaction timing and both administrators’ written approval
SCE used-EV rebate + DCAP Potentially DCAP income, pathway, preapproval and dealer rules; funding was limited DCAP approval before purchase and whether total assistance is permitted for the exact transaction
SCE used-EV rebate + Clean Cars 4 All Potentially Requires eligible district, income, older-vehicle retirement and preapproval District award letter, dealer rules, vehicle cap and SCE eligibility
SCE used-EV rebate + Replace Your Ride Potentially when that program accepts applications RYR was temporarily suspended and requires South Coast eligibility, vehicle retirement and approval Reopening, award rules, dealer and vehicle requirements, and permission from both administrators
SCE used-EV rebate + manufacturer or dealer discount Often potentially A discount can affect purchase price, financing and other incentive caps Final itemized contract and whether another program calculates benefits after discounts
SCE + PG&E or SDG&E used-EV rebate for the same vehicle No, when the applicant or current co-owner or co-lessee received the other rebate SCE expressly excludes listed same-vehicle utility and clean-fuel rebates received by the applicant or co-owner/co-lessee Prior participation by every current owner and lessee
Charge Ready Home + marketplace $100 installation offer Possibly The discount may reduce reimbursable project cost; terms do not promise an additive $100 Written invoice treatment and Charge Ready Home administrator approval
Charge Ready Home + another panel, circuit or charger incentive Possibly for distinct costs The same expense should not be reimbursed twice and total rebates cannot exceed eligible cost Cost allocation and duplication rules from both programs
Vehicle incentive + vehicle-retirement incentive Potentially, depending on program Replacement grants may already include the retirement benefit or prohibit a second CARB vehicle award Apply-first requirement, scrappage sequence, award cap and both administrators’ stacking rules

The key sequencing rule: Obtain approval first from any program that prohibits an early purchase, then reserve the SCE rebate before completing the transaction whenever possible. Keep itemized vehicle and electrical-work records so the same expense is not claimed twice.

Apartment, workplace and fleet charging programs

Charge Ready Home is for a qualifying single-family residence with its own meter and panel. Apartment or condominium property owners, workplaces and fleets should not use it as the answer to a multifamily or commercial project. SCE has separate transportation-electrification offerings, but program status and application windows differ. For example, SCE’s Charge Ready Light Duty application portal closed to new applications on June 30, 2026. Start at SCE’s current transportation-electrification program directory and confirm that the specific offering is accepting applications.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for the SCE EV rebate to be processed, and how long does it take to get it?

SCE does not publish one guaranteed total processing time. It says payment is typically processed within 20 days after the final claim is approved; preapproval and claim review happen before that and may take longer if documents are missing or inconsistent.

What EV incentives does Southern California Edison offer?

SCE offers a $1,000 or income-qualified $4,000 total Pre-Owned EV Rebate, up to $4,200 for qualifying home electrical work through Charge Ready Home, an advertised $100 marketplace installation offer, TOU-D-PRIME electricity pricing and limited Charge Smart–SoCal managed-charging rewards.

How does the Edison EV rebate work?

Create a portal account, apply for preapproval to reserve funds, buy or lease an eligible used EV, and submit the final claim and transaction documents within 180 days. Approval at the preapproval stage is not the final rebate payment.

How do I apply for the SCE EV rebate?

Apply through SCE’s Pre-Owned EV Rebate portal, selecting the $1,000 standard option or $4,000 Rebate Plus from the start. Upload identity, SCE-account and eligibility records, then submit vehicle and transaction documents for the final claim.

What are the SCE EV rebate requirements?

You generally need an active SCE residential service address, an eligible used BEV or PHEV registered to that address, a qualifying purchase or lease, a claim started within 180 days and an agreement to keep the vehicle registered and possessed in California for 20 consecutive months.

What are the SCE EV rebate income limits?

The standard $1,000 rebate has no income test. Rebate Plus uses approved public-assistance enrollment or annual gross household-income limits that vary by household size, county or ZIP and transaction period; use SCE’s current lookup rather than an undated table.

Does SCE offer a rebate for a new EV?

SCE’s current consumer vehicle-acquisition rebate is for eligible pre-owned EVs, not a general new-EV purchase rebate. A new-EV shopper should check current California, manufacturer, regional and dealer programs separately.

Can I get an SCE rebate for a used Tesla?

Yes, potentially. The exact used Tesla model year and version must appear on SCE’s eligible-vehicle list, and the customer, transaction, address, prior-rebate and retention rules must all be met.

Do plug-in hybrids qualify for the SCE pre-owned EV rebate?

Yes. Eligible pre-owned plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on SCE’s vehicle list can qualify; conventional non-plug-in hybrids cannot.

Can I lease a used EV or buy one through a private party and still qualify?

Yes, if all other rules are met. A lease must support at least 20 months of possession, an assumed lease needs at least 20 months remaining, and a private-party buyer must provide the finalized California title showing the transfer.

Does the SCE rebate follow the vehicle identification number?

Not necessarily. SCE checks whether the applicant or a current co-owner or co-lessee previously received one of the listed utility or clean-fuel rebates for that vehicle. Its rules do not say that a rebate paid to an unrelated former owner automatically disqualifies every later buyer.

Can I combine the SCE rebate with another California EV incentive?

Potentially, but both programs must allow the combination. Approval timing, dealer and scrappage rules, vehicle caps and duplicate-benefit restrictions can block a stack, so confirm the exact combination in writing before the transaction.

What is the SCE EV charger rebate, and does Charge Ready Home pay for the charger?

Charge Ready Home is the program usually meant by “SCE EV charger rebate.” It reimburses qualifying panel, circuit and outlet work up to the applicable cap; it does not generally pay for the Level 2 charger hardware itself.

Can renters qualify for Charge Ready Home?

Yes, an eligible renter in a qualifying single-family home can apply with the property owner’s written permission and must meet the same panel, meter, contractor and project rules.

What are SCE’s peak electricity hours?

On TOU-D-PRIME, the highest-priced period is generally 4–9 p.m. Lower-priced periods, seasonal details and CCA generation charges vary, so compare the current plan against your whole-home usage before switching.

How do I contact Southern California Edison about an EV rebate?

For the Pre-Owned EV Rebate, call 800-664-0056 Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Pacific, or email info@POEVRebate.com. For Charge Ready Home, call 760-307-8055 Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Pacific, or email evhome@scerebate.com.

Is there still a California EV rebate in 2026?

There is no open universal statewide replacement for the former CVRP, but multiple utility, income-qualified, air-district, vehicle-retirement, manufacturer and local programs remain or open periodically. Eligibility depends on the address, income, vehicle, timing and available funding.
