The goal of electric vehicles is to displace gasoline use. But not all EVs are the same – the extent to which an EV cuts gasoline consumption depends on how much gasoline the driver was using before switching to an EV.

As 2021 comes to an end, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on Coltura’s accomplishments this past year. We’re very proud of our work advancing the gasoline phaseout movement and are especially grateful to our supporters who have made this progress possible.

As concerns mount about the impacts of air pollution and the climate crisis, a new poll commissioned by Coltura and conducted by Nexus Polling, the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication found that by a 55% - 35% margin, U.S. voters support requiring all new cars sold in their state to be electric by 2030.

Understanding gasoline consumption patterns is key to making EV policies that maximize CO2 emissions reduction. Coltura was invited to participate in a workshop on electric vehicles being held this week by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to present its findings on gasoline superusers, the heaviest users of gasoline.

Meanwhile, the Senate approved an infrastructure bill with $7.5 billion in spending for EV charging.

To meet President Biden’s target of cutting carbon emissions in half by 2030, the U.S. must redefine its approach to incentivizing the switch from gas-powered vehicles to EVs. Instead of applying the same incentive to all drivers regardless of how much gasoline they use, EV incentives should be calculated based on the amount of gasoline displaced by the purchase of an EV.
