How The New York EV Rebate Works

Drive Clean is meant to be simple for the shopper.

1. Choose a vehicle on NYSERDA's eligible-model list.
2. Confirm the rebate amount for the exact version of the vehicle.
3. Buy or lease it from a participating New York dealership.
4. The dealer deducts the rebate at the point of sale.
5. The dealer submits the reimbursement paperwork to NYSERDA.

You cannot buy an EV from a nonparticipating or out-of-state dealer and later send NYSERDA a consumer rebate application. The dealership is part of the process.

Which EVs Qualify For The New York Drive Clean Rebate?

NYSERDA currently lists more than 60 eligible electric-vehicle models, including battery-electric vehicles and qualifying plug-in hybrids.

Eligibility and rebate amounts are model-specific. New models are added over time, so the official list is more reliable than an older third-party chart.

Before you place an order, check:

• Whether the exact model or configuration is on the current list.
• Its listed Drive Clean rebate amount.
• The vehicle's MSRP.
• Whether your dealership participates.

Does Tesla Qualify For The New York EV Rebate?

Yes, qualifying Tesla Model 3 and Model Y configurations appear on NYSERDA's eligible list.

The rebate can differ by configuration. That is important because the $42,000 MSRP rule can move an otherwise long-range EV into the $500 rebate tier.

For that reason, do not search only for “Tesla New York rebate” and assume one number applies to every Model 3 or Model Y. Check the exact trim on NYSERDA's live list.

Can You Get The New York EV Rebate On A Lease?

Yes. Purchases and leases can both qualify for the Drive Clean Rebate.

The original lease term must be at least 36 months. For purchases, NYSERDA's program rules require the buyer to retain ownership for at least 36 months unless NYSERDA gives prior written approval for an earlier sale. An individual's vehicle must also remain registered with the New York State DMV at a New York address for at least 36 months.

That makes the rebate a good fit for a typical three-year EV lease, but not for a short-term lease.

Do You Have To Live In New York?

Yes, for an individual consumer rebate you must be a New York State resident.

Buying from a New York dealer does not make an out-of-state resident eligible. Likewise, a New York resident generally cannot buy from an out-of-state dealership and claim Drive Clean afterward.

The vehicle needs to be purchased or leased through a participating dealer registered with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles as a new-car dealership.

Does New York Have A Drive Clean Rebate For Used EVs?

No. Drive Clean is aimed at qualifying new electric vehicles.

If you are shopping used, that does not necessarily mean an EV is a poor value. If you are shopping used, Drive Clean will not apply, but a used EV can still be worth comparing with a new model once you look at the purchase price, battery condition and any utility or local incentives available where you live.

Is The New York Drive Clean Rebate Still Funded?

Yes. New York announced an additional $30 million in Drive Clean funding on April 21, 2026.

The program has considerable history behind it. NYSERDA reported that more than 228,000 Drive Clean rebates had been issued since the program launched in 2017.

That longevity is useful for EV shoppers, but funding is still something to verify at the time of purchase. Incentive programs can change amounts, pause or adjust eligibility.

What About New York EV Charger Incentives?

Drive Clean is a vehicle rebate, not a statewide rebate for installing a charger at a single-family home.

That does not mean New Yorkers are out of options. Several electric utilities offer EV charging rates, managed-charging programs or other incentives that can lower the cost of charging at home. Availability depends on where you live and which utility serves your home.

Search your utility's name plus “EV charger rebate,” “EV rate” or “managed charging,” and cross-check the results with the U.S. Department of Energy's AFDC incentive database.

Why The $2,000 Rebate Is Only Part Of The Decision

The strongest Drive Clean value may be on EVs that already sit near the affordable end of the market. Taking $2,000 off a competitively priced model can narrow the upfront gap with a comparable gasoline car before you account for fuel and maintenance.

But the right EV still needs to fit your life. Check real-world range, home or workplace charging access, winter driving needs and the public charging available on trips you actually make.
