Gasoline Phaseout News – April 2025
Tariffs, Gas Prices, and EVs
Tariffs and rising global uncertainty may bring an unexpected upside: lower gasoline demand. As economic activity slows, people drive and consume less, businesses produce and ship fewer goods, and oil use and emissions decline.

However, this reduced demand might also lead to lower gas prices. The Department of Energy predicts average U.S. gas prices of $3.10/gallon this summer—the lowest (inflation-adjusted) since 2020. While this might temporarily slow EV adoption, gasoline prices remain highly volatile and typically cost twice as much as electricity per mile driven.
Tariffs are likely to raise the prices of all new vehicles, including electric vehicles, which rely on raw materials for batteries and electric motors from China. The impact may be greater, however, for gas vehicles, which have many more parts than EVs. Many EV manufacturers have also brought much of their production to the U.S.
Bottom line: Despite economic disruptions from tariffs, EVs continue to offer significant long-term savings for both drivers and the environment.
Making the case in key Congressional Districts that EV incentives deliver major economic benefits to working families
With President Trump and many in Congress calling for the rollback or elimination of electric vehicle incentives, Coltura released analyses of gasoline spending and the fuel cost savings from EVs in 11 key Congressional Districts.
Coltura’s Rob Sargent was quoted in Tidewater Virginia’s Williamsburg-Yorktown Daily, calling on Congress to preserve EV programs. “EV tax credits and any programs designed to make EVs available to the American people are key,” he said, “and can unlock decades of savings for people for what has been a strain on their household finances.”
Federal EV tax credits help make this possible. Contrary to the prevailing narrative, current EV tax credits don’t benefit the wealthiest coastal elites – they make too much to qualify. By making EVs more affordable, the EV tax credit is people’s ticket out of lifelong, costly gasoline dependence. Helping working families make the switch to new and used EVs is the best shot for many to escape gasoline’s decades-long strain on their household finances.
Data Insight of the Month: Relative Cost of Gasoline Rises in Q1 2025

The cost of gasoline relative to electricity for vehicle fueling increased in Q1 2025, resulting in US EV drivers saving an average of 6.3 cents on fuel according to Coltura’s EV Savings Index. The Index shows that drivers who switch from gas to electric vehicles can save thousands of dollars each year, especially those who drive the most. In many states, high-mileage drivers can save more than $1,500 annually in fuel and maintenance costs by going electric. The savings are even greater in areas with high gas prices, low electricity rates, and/or strong EV incentives. Explore how much drivers in your state could save at data.coltura.org/ev-savings-index.
Fuel Change This Earth Month
April is Earth Month — a powerful moment to act for our planet’s future. At Coltura, we’re laser-focused on tackling gasoline use, the source of 20% of US CO2 emissions. Through our groundbreaking research and practical solutions, we’re driving the transition to cleaner, more affordable electric vehicles.
Your donation fuels our impact. With your support, we can reduce harmful emissions, save families money at the pump, and create healthier communities for everyone. This Earth Month, join our community of changemakers by supporting Coltura’s work to protect the planet we all call home.
Norway Removes Fuel Pumps as EVs Take Over
In a groundbreaking shift, gas stations in Norway are removing gas pumps as electric vehicles increasingly dominate the roads. With EVs making up over 90% of new car sales, demand for gasoline has dropped so sharply that fuel stations are closing or converting to charging hubs. This bold move underscores what’s possible with strong EV policies and consumer incentives. Coltura is working to bring similar change to the U.S. by promoting data-driven policies that speed the shift away from gasoline. Norway’s success shows the future is electric — and it’s closer than we think.

Gas Station of the Month: Beavercreek Shell
700 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the Beavercreek Shell station, causing a sheen on the water in Little Beaver Creek. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations, or BUSTR, and the Beavercreek Township Fire Department responded, but the gas station has remained closed for several months as the leak continues to be investigated.
EVs are Going to the Dogs—in a Good Way
Some drivers aren’t just switching to EVs for the fuel savings — they’re also doing it for their dogs! Features like Tesla’s “Dog Mode,” which keeps the cabin cool and displays a message letting passersby know your pup is safe, are winning hearts (and tails). As EVs evolve, they’re not just cleaner and cheaper — they’re also more pet-friendly. For dog lovers, that’s a game-changer. At Coltura, we support all reasons for ditching gas — even the furry ones. Because a world with fewer emissions and happier dogs? That’s something we can all wag our tails about.
