EVS IN NEW YORK CITY
THE FIGHT AGAINST AIR POLLUTION, THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND WASTEFUL SPENDING
Want to hear more uplifting stories of ways people are standing up to industry? Stories of citizens and governments are working together to both make a positive impact and save tax money?
Look no further than New York City’s growing electric vehicle fleet.
What started as the NYC Clean Fleet Plan, announced in 2015, is now 6 years ahead of schedule. New York has already replaced 2,200 gasoline powered vehicles with plug-in electric vehicles, and is looking to double the amount originally pledged, to more than 4,000 by 2026.
There are now thousands fewer gasoline vehicles polluting the streets of New York, wreaking havoc on our environment and our health.
Not only has this change been saving the millions of people walking outside in the city daily from breathing in more CO2, it has saved the city money. In some cases a lot of money. For example, the city using the all-electric Nissan Leaf instead of a gasoline car is expected to save 21% over the course of its lifetime. Read more on the city’s analysis of their EV fleet.
Citizens in New York State are pushing for more. For example, ElectrifyNY is a coalition of transit and environmental groups that has called for transitioning to fully electric vehicles by 2040 in New York State and local municipalities.
New York is not alone. Government officials in cities large and small are stepping up across the country. It’s not enough though. This is why Coltura is calling for action. Cities are wasting tax money on costlier, polluting vehicles. We need citizens to stand up for their right to clean air and fight air pollution. We need citizens to join the movement to go beyond gasoline – a movement by citizens for citizens.
Every year EVs are becoming more and more affordable, better and cleaner. Why settle for gasoline powered cars? Why settle for less?
America, the birthplace of mass-produced vehicles, should be leading the charge for a massive culture shift away from polluting vehicles.
One of the biggest impacts citizens can make to fight air pollution and the climate crisis is fighting for government fleet EVs. New York City is proof. The government should listen.
