March 2018 Gasoline Phaseout News
Coltura Leads “Yes Clean Cars” Coalition in Showdown with Big Oil over Gas Car Phaseout Bill in California
The future of gasoline is headed for a showdown vote in Sacramento on April 16 in the Assembly Transportation Committee. The vote concerns AB 1745, a bill which provides that model year 2040 and later new vehicles sold in California must be zero emissions vehicles.
On one side is Yes Clean Cars, a coalition of environmental and electric car groups led by Coltura which includes the Sierra Club, Earthjustice, Plug In America, Stand.Earth, NextGen California, Fossil Free California, the Center for Climate Protection, and multiple 350.org chapters. On March 16, the yescleancars.org website launched, follows by the Yescleancars Facebook page.
On the other side is the Western States Petroleum Association (the oil industry lobby), the California Independent Oil Marketing Association (the gas station lobby), the natural gas lobby, and others. A story on the campaign and oil industry opposition recently appeared in CleanTechnica.
Key to prevailing in the committee will be the votes of Jim Frazier, Chair of the Transportation Committee, along with Assembly members Aguilar-Curry, Chu, Nazarian, Gipson, O’Donnell and Medina. Yes Clean Cars is working to mobilize constituents in those districts to contact their assembly members to let them know the importance of those bills. California residents are urged to this quick and easy tool to contact your representatives–it only takes a minute, and will yield big results.
