Coltura and Yes Clean Cars Reloading for 2019 Clean Cars Campaign
____________
Coltura and the Yes Clean Cars coalition are gearing up to pass the Clean Cars 2040 Act in 2019. The 2018 bill did not advance in significant part because of oil industry obstruction, and we are organizing to ensure it does not meet the same fate in 2019. Particular focus will be on bringing additional groups into the coalition, including labor, health groups, students, chambers of commerce, mayors, and other key actors whose support will help make the phaseout of dirty gas cars a major priority in the upcoming year — groups we didn’t have time to reach in the hectic six weeks we had to put the coalition together in February and March of this year.
Thanks to everyone who wrote letters and made calls in favor of the Clean Cars 2040 bill in the 2018 legislative session. Your advocacy demonstrated a strong base of support for the legislation, and gave us confidence that we can pass the bill in 2019 with a broader coalition.
Thanks also to the Sierra Club, Stand.Earth, 350 Bay Area, 350 Silicon Valley, Brightline Defense, Earthjustice, NextGen California, Fossil Free California, Center for Climate Protection, Plug In America, and Environment California, who were terrific coalition partners and worked hard to pass the law.
Assemblyman Phil Ting made it clear that the fight for the bill has only just begun, stating: . “If we want clean air, we need clean cars. For the sake of our health and our environment, we need to move away from gas-powered vehicles. While we won’t be able to achieve that through AB 1745 this year, California will get there … just as Norway, India, China, France and Great Britain have committed to doing. This is only the beginning. I’ll continue fighting for Clean Cars 2040 because it puts us on a path to a cleaner future.”
